PPS GF40 is polyphenylene sulfide with 40% glass. It keeps its strength near 200°C, shrugs off almost every chemical below that, and is flame retardant without additives. It is used for pump parts, fuel and under-hood parts, and electrical parts that see heat.
Typical PPS GF40 properties
| Property | Typical value | US units | Test method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density | 1.65–1.68 g/cm³ | 0.060–0.061 lb/in³ | ASTM D792 / ISO 1183 |
| Tensile strength | 150–200 MPa | 21,800–29,000 psi | ASTM D638 / ISO 527 |
| Flexural modulus | 13.0–15.0 GPa | 1,890,000–2,180,000 psi | ASTM D790 / ISO 178 |
| Notched Izod impact | 60–90 J/m | 1.1–1.7 ft·lb/in | ASTM D256 |
| Heat deflection, 1.8 MPa (264 psi) | 260–270°C | 500–518°F | ASTM D648 / ISO 75 |
| Water absorption, 24 h | 0.02–0.05% | ASTM D570 / ISO 62 | |
| Mold shrinkage | 0.2–0.8% | 0.002–0.008 in/in | ASTM D955 / ISO 294-4 |
Typical ranges for standard grades, dry as molded, from published data sheets. Your grade’s own data sheet and the lot COA are what count. Notched Izod uses 3.2 mm (1/8 in) bars.

What changes these numbers
- Mold temperature. Run 135–160°C. Avoid roughly 88–127°C, where crystallinity is unpredictable and parts can change size later.
- Flash. PPS melt is very thin and flashes easily. Tight tools and vents sized for it matter.
- Low elongation. Glass-filled PPS is stiff but does not stretch much before breaking. Snap fits need care.
- Drying advice varies. Published drying temperatures differ by about 50°C between suppliers. Follow your grade’s sheet.
Common PPS GF40 grades
- GF40
- Glass and mineral filled (around 65% total)
- Carbon-filled grades
- Toughened grades
- Low-flash grades
Common questions
What is the heat deflection temperature of PPS GF40?
Typically about 260–270°C (500–518°F) at 1.8 MPa.
Is PPS flame retardant?
Yes. Most PPS grades meet UL 94 V-0 without flame-retardant additives. Check the listing for the thickness you need.
PPS or PEEK?
PEEK is tougher and handles more heat, at a much higher cost. PPS GF40 covers many hot, chemical parts for far less. See PEEK alternatives.
Need PPS GF40, or something close?
A polymer chemist reviews every request, then matches your grade or finds a qualified equivalent and prices it.
