Request a QuoteThe short answer
Fortron 1140L4 is Celanese’s 40% glass reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS-GF40) for injection molding. Celanese describes it as the strongest and toughest grade in the range, with heat and chemical resistance, good electrical properties and inherent flame retardancy. It contains a release agent. Published values (ISO, revised 2026-09-08): density 1,650 kg/m³ (ISO 1183), tensile modulus 14,700 MPa and tensile stress at break 195 MPa (ISO 527), HDT 270°C / 518°F at 1.8 MPa (ISO 75), melting point 280°C, and UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm and 0.38 mm. Celanese recommends drying at 130°C, a 310–340°C melt and a 140–160°C mold. The sheet lists no melt flow. These are typical values; confirm them on the current producer data sheet. The closest grade from another producer to ask about is Syensqo’s Ryton R-4. None is a drop-in replacement.

Mold temperatures of 140–160°C need oil or electric mold heating rather than water. Check your press and tool before planning a trial.
Celanese’s Chemille record for 1140L4 lists drinking water approvals (NSF 61, WRAS, KTW, EN 16421), and Celanese also sells 1140L4 DW, developed for drinking water. Ask for the certificate for your exact grade and color.
Grades to ask about instead of Fortron 1140L4
The closest option from another producer is Syensqo’s Ryton R-4, another 40% glass fiber PPS. Celanese also makes 1140L4 variants with the same glass level. Neither Celanese nor Syensqo publishes melt flow for these grades, so flow cannot be compared from the sheets. None is a drop-in replacement. If your part, drawing or customer approval names Fortron 1140L4, any change needs that approval and a trial.
| Grade | Producer | Melt flow | Density | Key property | How it compares |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryton R-4 | Syensqo | Not published on the sheet | Specific gravity 1.69 (ASTM D792) | Tensile strength 150 MPa (ISO 527-2); flexural modulus 14,000 MPa (ISO 178); HDT 265°C at 1.8 MPa (ASTM D648, unannealed); UL 94 V-0 and 5VA at 1.6 mm | Ask about. Same polymer and glass level. Lower tensile and flexural strength on the ISO rows, slightly higher density. The Ryton sheet is mostly ASTM and lists no processing data. Syensqo’s R-4 data sheet lists North America, but its current R-4 product page lists Asia Pacific as the only region, so confirm the regional version and supply first. See our Ryton R-4 page. | Fortron 1140L4 HR | Celanese | Not published on the sheet | 1.65 g/cm³ (ISO 1183) | Tensile modulus 15,600 MPa; tensile stress at break 200 MPa (ISO 527); notched Izod 8.5 kJ/m² (ISO 180/1A); HDT 270°C at 1.8 MPa; V-0 at 0.38 mm | Check. Same producer and glass level, with improved hydrolysis resistance (worth asking about if parts see hot water or coolant). Slightly stiffer, slightly lower notched Izod. Listed as a new product, so confirm supply and approvals. Quote this alternative › |
| Fortron 1140L4 DW | Celanese | Not published on the sheet | 1.65 g/cm³ (ISO 1183) | Tensile modulus 14,700 MPa; tensile stress at break 195 MPa; HDT 270°C at 1.8 MPa; V-0 at 0.38 and 1.5 mm, 5VA at 3 mm | Check. Same published mechanical values as 1140L4; Celanese says it was developed for drinking water applications. Ask for the drinking water certificate for your color. Quote this alternative › |

Typical uses for Fortron 1140L4
Celanese names these uses for Fortron 1140L4:
- Electrical and electronic parts such as bobbins, lamp housings and brush holders
- Automotive heaters, pumps, valves and fuel rails
- Microwave oven rings
- Distillation column packings and other parts that need strength with resistance to aggressive chemicals
What to check before you switch
- Owner check: Fortron is a Celanese brand, made by Fortron Industries (Celanese and Kureha). Kureha’s own PPS compounds are sold by Daicel as Durafide. See the brand ownership tracker.
- Compare like with like. Celanese data is ISO; Syensqo’s Ryton R-4 sheet is mostly ASTM. Compare ISO rows only, and do not compare ISO 75 HDT with ASTM D648 HDT.
- Pick the right version. 1140L4, 1140L4 HR and 1140L4 DW are separate grades. Approvals, drinking water certificates and UL files follow the exact grade and color.
- Hot molds. Celanese asks for a 140–160°C mold and at least 135°C for full crystallinity. Colder molds can leave parts that keep changing size in service. See the PPS buying guide.
- Dry it. Celanese asks for 130°C and 0.02% maximum moisture in a dehumidified dryer, and says to keep it in the dryer until use, for no more than 60 h. See our resin drying guide.
- Flash. PPS melt is very thin. Tools and vents need to be sized for it, especially when you move from another PPS grade.
- UL listing. Ask for the yellow card for your color and wall thickness. See UL 94 flame ratings.
- Run a trial lot and check fill, flash, shrinkage, weld lines and dimensions before you switch production. See PPS GF40 properties for typical ranges.

Buying Fortron 1140L4: price, lead time and lot size
- Lot size. From one gaylord to a railcar. See gaylord, LTL and truckload for typical weights per box.
- Where it ships from. 22+ partner warehouse locations. Lead time is confirmed with your quote. Material already in a partner warehouse usually moves sooner than a grade that has to come from the producer.
- Price. We do not publish prices because they move with feedstock, freight and order size. What moves your price most: lot size, color code, which 1140L4 version you need, ship-to region, and whether you need Fortron 1140L4 itself or can accept a matched alternative. See how resin is priced and the monthly market update.
- Paperwork. Supplier COA on every prime lot (what a COA shows). Ask for the producer’s UL file, drinking water certificate or compliance letters if your part needs them. Payment terms are confirmed with your quote.
- Trying an alternative? Samples (~50 lb) are available upon credit approval, or start with one gaylord as a trial lot. Custom compounding and color matching are available.
- If Fortron 1140L4 itself is not available. If we cannot source it, we tell you, then quote a matched alternative with a side-by-side comparison.
Send the grade and color code, your annual volume and ship-to location. A polymer chemist reviews every request before we quote. For several grades at once, use the resin RFQ template.
