About Polyethylene (HDPE / LDPE / LLDPE)
Polyethylene is the highest-volume plastic in the world for good reason: it's inexpensive, resistant to most acids, bases, salts and alcohols, easy to process, and available in densities tuned from flexible (LDPE) to rigid and strong (HDPE). It is attacked by strong oxidizers and swollen by aromatic and chlorinated solvents, and some grades stress-crack in contact with detergents. It's a poor barrier to gases and has low stiffness and heat resistance, so it's chosen for toughness, chemical resistance and cost rather than rigidity.
