The short answer

Santoprene 101-64 is a soft, black, polyolefin-based thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) from Celanese. Celanese recommends it for parts that need excellent flex fatigue resistance and notes excellent ozone resistance. The current sheet (revised 2026-08-12) lists Shore A 70 on a 15 second reading (ISO 48-4 / ISO 868); the 64 in the grade name is a grade designation, not the measured hardness. It also gives density 0.97 g/cm³, tensile stress at break 6.47 MPa, elongation at break 450 % and compression set of 25 % at 70°C, 24 h (ISO 815). Celanese does not publish a melt flow rate; it says the grade is shear dependent. These are typical values; confirm them on the current producer data sheet. The closest grade to ask about is Celanese’s natural, colorable Santoprene 201-64. No grade is a drop-in replacement.

Also written as: Santoprene 101-64 TPV, Santoprene 101-64 black. Santoprene was an ExxonMobil brand until Celanese bought the business in December 2021, so older paperwork may say ExxonMobil. The 64 in the name is not the current measured hardness: the sheet lists Shore A 70 at 15 seconds. Quote the full grade code from your drawing or bag label.

Santoprene 101-64 specs from the data sheet

Typical values from Celanese’s Santoprene 101-64 data sheets (SI and US units, Celanese Materials Database, revised 2026-08-12). Typical values are not specifications; the lot COA shows what you actually receive. Values only compare at the same test method and condition. Values for the natural 201-64 are not mixed in here; see the equivalents table.

How to read the hardness: Celanese reports Shore A 70 after a 15 second delay (ISO 48-4 / ISO 868). Durometer readings drop the longer the indenter stays on the sample, so a 1, 3 or 5 second reading on the same specimen reads higher than the 15 second value. The 64 in the grade name is therefore not a shorter-delay version of this reading; treat it as a grade designation. Readings also shift with specimen type (molded or extruded) and thickness, so compare hardness only at the same standard, delay time and specimen.

Grades to ask about instead of Santoprene 101-64

The closest option is Celanese’s natural, colorable Santoprene 201-64, which has nearly the same published properties and processing window. Celanese does not publish melt flow for either grade, so flow is matched only by the same processing temperatures on the sheets. None is a drop-in replacement. If your part, drawing or automotive spec names Santoprene 101-64, any change needs that approval and usually a trial.

From each producer’s published data; typical values, confirm on the current producer data sheet. Brand owners and grade names change.

Need it a little harder? Santoprene 101-73 is the next black grade up: Shore A 78 on a 15 second reading, tensile stress at break 7.98 MPa and compression set 27 % at 70°C, 24 h. It is not an equivalent because the hardness is 8 points higher. For a much harder black grade, see Santoprene 101-80 (Shore A 87 on a 15 second reading). We did not list TPVs from other producers: none publish a melt flow we could match, and their hardness and compression set are often reported at different dwell times and test lengths. Ask us if you want one quoted. For the wider choice of rubber-like materials, see TPV vs. EPDM.

Typical uses for Santoprene 101-64

Celanese describes Santoprene 101-64 as a versatile TPV for a wide range of applications and recommends it where excellent flex fatigue resistance is needed. The sheet supports these uses:

  • Molded and extruded parts that flex repeatedly and see ozone
  • Automotive parts covered by the approvals on the sheet (BMW, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, SAIC, Stellantis and VW specifications)
  • Outdoor parts (UL 746C f1) and appliance parts exposed to detergent (UL 749 f3, UL 2157 f4)
  • Small tubing, sheet, coextruded and blow-molded parts

What to check before you switch

  • Owner check: the current sheet is issued by Celanese. Older paperwork may say ExxonMobil. Confirm on your quote who issues the COA and any compliance letters.
  • Hardness check: the name says 64 but the current sheet lists Shore A 70 at 15 seconds (ISO 48-4 / ISO 868). If a drawing calls for Shore A 64, confirm the standard and delay time it means before you treat 101-64 as a match, and write the hardness, standard and delay time you need on the RFQ.
  • Compare compression set at the same standard, temperature and time. Seals depend on this number. See seal compression set problems.
  • Shrinkage is very different by direction: 3.2 % in flow and 0.8 % across flow on the sheet. A substitute can change part dimensions even at the same hardness.
  • Keep it away from acetal and PVC in the barrel. Celanese lists Santoprene TPV as incompatible with both.
  • Dry it. Celanese recommends desiccant drying for 3 hours at 80°C. See our resin drying guide.
  • Check fluids and oils for your actual service conditions, and run a trial on your tool or die for shrinkage, surface finish and any bond to a hard substrate.

Common questions

What is Santoprene 101-64?

Santoprene 101-64 is a soft, black, polyolefin-based thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) from Celanese. It runs on standard thermoplastic equipment for injection molding, extrusion and blow molding. Celanese recommends it for parts that need excellent flex fatigue resistance and notes excellent ozone resistance. It was an ExxonMobil brand until December 2021.

What is the hardness of Santoprene 101-64?

Celanese’s current sheet lists Shore A 70, read after a 15 second delay (ISO 48-4 / ISO 868). The 64 in the grade name is a grade designation, not the value on the current sheet. A different delay time does not explain the gap: a shorter reading on the same specimen gives a higher number, not a lower one. When you compare sheets or write an RFQ, state the Shore A value, the standard and the delay time.

What is the melt flow of Santoprene 101-64?

Celanese does not publish a melt flow rate for this grade. The sheet says Santoprene TPV is shear dependent: viscosity is high at low shear and drops as shear rises, and temperature has little effect. Smaller gates and higher shear help it fill.

What is the difference between Santoprene 101-64 and 101-73?

Both are black Celanese TPVs with the same density (0.97 g/cm³). 101-73 is harder (Shore A 78 vs 70 at 15 seconds) and stronger (tensile at break 7.98 vs 6.47 MPa). Compression set is close: 27 vs 25 % at 70°C, 24 h, and 41 vs 44 % at 125°C, 70 h. Their automotive approval lists differ.

What is equivalent to Santoprene 101-64?

No grade is a drop-in replacement. The closest grade to ask about is Celanese’s Santoprene 201-64, the natural, colorable version with nearly the same published values (Shore A 69, compression set 25 % at 70°C). Its automotive approval list is shorter, so check your spec. Compare data sheets, run a trial and get approval if your part names 101-64.

Is Santoprene 101-64 UL listed or food contact compliant?

Celanese lists UL files QMFZ2.E80017 and QMFZ8.E80017, UL 94 HB recognition at 1.5 mm and 1.0 mm, UL 746B relative thermal indices of 90°C (95°C for strength at 3.0 mm) and UL 746C f1 outdoor suitability. The sheet does not state food contact compliance.

How do you dry and mold Santoprene 101-64?

Celanese recommends desiccant drying for at least 3 hours at 80°C to 0.08 % moisture or less. Injection melt is 185–220°C with a 200°C optimum, mold 10–50°C, and up to 20 % regrind. Keep acetal and PVC out of the barrel; Celanese lists them as incompatible.

Can ResinBridge quote Santoprene 101-64?
