The short answer

NORYL GFN2 is SABIC’s general-purpose, 20% glass fiber reinforced blend of polyphenylene ether (PPE) and polystyrene (PS) for injection molding. SABIC still lists it in its SABIC Specialties material finder, with Americas, Asia and Europe data. Published melt flow is 9 g/10 min at 300°C, 5.0 kg (ASTM D1238). Specific gravity is 1.2 (ASTM D792), tensile modulus is 6,200 MPa (ASTM D638), HDT is 135°C at 1.82 MPa on 3.2 mm bars (ASTM D648) and notched Izod is 119 J/m (ASTM D256). The sheet lists UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and up and a UL 746C F1 outdoor rating. These are typical values; confirm them on the current producer data sheet. The closest grade to ask about is SABIC’s NORYL GFN2F, which has the same published flow, mechanical and HDT values on SABIC’s Americas sheets and which SABIC says carries “FDA food contact compliance and NSF 61 listings in several colors”. No grade is a drop-in replacement.

Also written as: NORYL GFN2 resin, NORYL™ Resin GFN2, Noryl GFN2, PPE/PS GF20. Drawings and bag labels may add a suffix after the grade (for example GFN2-701). We did not find a SABIC source that defines these suffixes; SABIC’s material finder lists the grade as GFN2 and says all colors are customizable. Quote the full code from your drawing or bag label.

NORYL GFN2 specs from the data sheet

Typical values from SABIC’s NORYL GFN2 technical data sheet for the Americas (revision 20260803, from SABIC’s document server). SABIC’s Asia and Europe data for GFN2 differ in places (for example, the Asia tab lists specific gravity 1.23 and MFR 11.7 g/10 min at 300°C, 5 kg), so use the sheet for the region your resin comes from. Typical values are not specifications. Confirm them on the current producer data sheet; the lot COA shows what you actually receive. Values only compare at the same test method and condition.

Grades to ask about instead of NORYL GFN2

The closest option is SABIC’s own NORYL GFN2F, the same 20% glass PPE+PS, which SABIC says carries FDA food contact compliance and NSF 61 listings in several colors. NORYL SE1GFN2 is also 20% glass PPE+PS but contains a non-brominated, non-chlorinated flame retardant. Its Americas sheet gives no melt flow; SABIC’s Europe data show an MVR close to GFN2’s, so treat it as a check. We did not find a current producer-published sheet for a 20% glass PPE+PS from another producer that we could verify, so none is listed. None is a drop-in replacement. If your part, drawing or customer approval names NORYL GFN2, any change needs that approval and usually a trial.

Same polymer, glass level and published flow, with matching mechanical and HDT values on the Americas sheet. SABIC adds FDA food contact compliance and NSF 61 listings “in several colors” and positions it for water management parts. Its sheet is an older revision (20241015) and lists thermal expansion over −40 to 40°C rather than −40 to 90°C. Check which colors are listed if you need the food or NSF status. Same polymer and glass level, but it contains a non-brominated, non-chlorinated flame retardant. The Americas sheet (revision 20261106) gives no melt flow; SABIC’s Europe data put its MVR at 12 vs 15 cm³/10 min for GFN2 (280°C, 10 kg), so flow looks similar, but confirm it for your region. Its flexural modulus (5,720 MPa) is measured at a 100 mm span, so it does not compare directly with GFN2’s 50 mm span value. Quote this alternative ›

Typical uses for NORYL GFN2

SABIC lists very low moisture absorption, high strength, hydrolytic stability, low warpage, low specific gravity and dimensional stability among the features of NORYL GFN2. The sheet and material finder name these uses:

  • Construction and building components
  • Electrical components and displays
  • Lawn and garden equipment
  • Commercial appliance parts
  • Electronic components, and mobile phone, computer and tablet parts (SABIC’s industry list)
  • Indoor and outdoor parts, supported by the UL 746C F1 rating

What to check before you switch

  • Owner check: the current NORYL GFN2 sheet (revision 20260803) is issued by SABIC, and NORYL is listed in SABIC’s Specialties business. Confirm on your quote who issues the COA and any compliance letters. See who makes NORYL.
  • Glass changes everything versus unfilled grades. NORYL 731 is SABIC’s non-reinforced PPE+PS; moving between 731 and GFN2 changes stiffness, shrinkage and warpage, so it needs a tool and part review, not just a material swap. See glass-filled plastics.
  • Flame rating: GFN2 is listed UL 94 HB only. If your part needs V-1 or 5VA, look at SE1GFN2 and get approval. See UL 94 flame ratings.
  • Food contact or potable water: SABIC calls GFN2F the “FDA food compliant / NSF version” and GFN2 the “NON FDA / NSF version”. Specify GFN2F and confirm your color is listed.
  • Dry it properly. The sheet asks for 110–120°C for 3–4 hours, no more than 8 hours cumulative, and 0.02 % maximum moisture. See our resin drying guide.
  • Compare melt flow only at the same condition. SABIC measures GFN2 at 300°C, 5.0 kg; other PPE blends may be reported at different temperatures or loads.
  • If your approval file quotes an older GFN2 sheet, compare it line by line with the current revision (20260803) and ask SABIC about any change that matters for your part.
  • Run a trial lot and check fill, shrinkage, warpage, cycle time and appearance before you switch production.
