NORYL 731 is a unreinforced blend of polyphenylene ether (PPE) and polystyrene (PS), non flame retardant (UL 94 HB), from SABIC. The data sheet lists melt flow rate as 9.2 g/10 min at 280 °C (536 °F), 5.0 kg (11.0 lb) load (ASTM D1238). Specific gravity / density: 1.06 (1.06 g/cm³, about 0.0383 lb/in³). Grades from other producers to ask about include XYRON 400H and XYRON 300H. They are not identical, so compare the data sheets and run a trial before switching.

NORYL 731 specs from the data sheet
Typical values from the producer’s published data sheet (NORYL 731 (SABIC Americas data sheet, revision dated November 9, 2023 on sabic.com)). Typical values are not specifications; the lot COA shows what you actually receive. Values only compare at the same test method and condition.

Grades to ask about instead of NORYL 731
These grades from other producers have similar published specs. None is a drop-in replacement: additive packages, flow at molding shear rates, color and approvals differ. If your part, drawing or customer approval names NORYL 731, any change needs your approval and usually a trial.
| Grade | Producer | Melt flow | Density | Key property | How it compares |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XYRON 400H | Asahi Kasei | Not published | 1.06 g/cm³ (ISO 1183) | HDT at 1.8 MPa, unannealed: 110 °C (230 °F) by ASTM D648 and 104 °C (219 °F) by ISO 75-2/A; flexural modulus 2,370 MPa (about 344,000 psi) by ISO 178; Charpy notched 18 kJ/m²; UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm | Same type of material (unreinforced, non flame retardant modified PPE/PS) and the same density as NORYL 731. Its ASTM HDT is a few degrees lower than 731's 117 °C at 3.2 mm (the 400H sheet does not state bar thickness), and its ISO flexural modulus is a little lower than 731's 2,550 MPa. No melt flow is listed, so flow cannot be compared. Values come from a distributor-hosted copy of the data sheet, so confirm them with Asahi Kasei. This is not a drop-in replacement. |
| XYRON 300H | Asahi Kasei | Not published (sheet describes it as easy flow) | 1.06 g/cm³ (ISO 1183) | HDT at 1.8 MPa, unannealed: 100 °C (212 °F) by ASTM D648 and 94 °C (201 °F) by ISO 75-2/A; flexural modulus 2,320 MPa (about 336,000 psi) by ISO 178; Charpy notched 19 kJ/m²; UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm | Also an unreinforced, non flame retardant PPE/PS at the same density, but with clearly lower heat resistance than NORYL 731 (100 °C vs 117 °C on ASTM D648) and slightly lower stiffness. Only consider it where the part's heat needs allow. Values come from a distributor-hosted copy of the data sheet, so confirm them with Asahi Kasei. This is not a drop-in replacement. |

Typical uses for NORYL 731
SABIC describes NORYL 731 as an injection moldable grade with good surface appearance, high ductility, good impact resistance, low moisture absorption, creep resistance, dimensional stability and hydrolytic stability, and calls it an excellent candidate for a variety of applications. The sheet does not name specific end uses.
What to check before you switch
- Compare full data sheets side by side, including test method, bar thickness and test conditions, not just headline numbers.
- If the part carries a UL listing, confirm the substitute's UL Yellow Card covers your thickness, color and rating.
- Check chemical exposure in the end use, since PPE/PS blends can be sensitive to some solvents and oils.
- Run molding trials and check shrinkage, fit, warp and surface appearance before releasing production.
- Check whether a customer or OEM specification names NORYL 731; a substitute usually needs formal approval.
Buying NORYL 731 or an equivalent
Send us the grade name, your annual volume and ship-to location. A polymer chemist checks the data sheet and we quote NORYL 731 where we can source it, or a qualified equivalent, saying clearly which one you would get. Orders start at one gaylord. For background on this resin family see PPO/PPE grades and buying guide; for several grades at once, use the resin RFQ template.
Trade names belong to their owners. ResinBridge is not affiliated with these producers; grade names are used only to identify the material. Data reflects published sheets as of October 2026.

Common questions
What is NORYL 731?
NORYL 731 is a SABIC unreinforced blend of polyphenylene ether (PPE) and polystyrene (PS) for injection molding. SABIC describes it as having good surface appearance, high ductility, good impact resistance, low moisture absorption, creep resistance, dimensional stability and hydrolytic stability.
What is the melt flow of NORYL 731?
SABIC's Americas data sheet lists a melt flow rate of 9.2 g/10 min at 280 °C (536 °F) with a 5.0 kg load (ASTM D1238), and a melt volume rate of 9 cm³/10 min at the same conditions (ISO 1133).
What is equivalent to NORYL 731?
There is no exact equivalent. Asahi Kasei XYRON 400H and XYRON 300H are also unreinforced, non flame retardant PPE/PS grades with the same 1.06 g/cm³ density, but their heat deflection and stiffness values differ and the sheets we found do not list melt flow. Any switch needs testing and, where required, customer approval.
Is NORYL 731 UL listed or food contact compliant?
The sheet lists UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and thicker under UL Yellow Card E121562-221150, with UL 746B relative thermal indices of 105 °C electrical, 90 °C mechanical with impact and 105 °C mechanical without impact. The NORYL 731 sheet does not state food contact or potable water compliance. SABIC makes those claims for the related grades 731F and 731S, so check their sheets if you need them.
Can ResinBridge quote NORYL 731?
Yes. Send the grade name and volume. A polymer chemist checks it and we quote the grade where we can source it, or a qualified equivalent, and say which. Orders start at one gaylord; U.S. and Canada only.
Need NORYL 731 or an equivalent?
A polymer chemist reviews every request, then matches your grade or finds a qualified equivalent and prices it.
