Polypropylene resin manufacturers in North America: PP producers, brands and plants

Who makes PP homopolymer, impact copolymer and random copolymer in the U.S., Canada and Mexico as of November 2026, and how to buy if you need less than a railcar.

Request a Quote

The short answer

As of November 2026, polypropylene (PP) resin in the U.S. is made by LyondellBasell (Pro-fax), Braskem America (INSPIRE), ExxonMobil (Exceed and ExxonMobil PP), TotalEnergies (Lumicene for metallocene grades), Formosa Plastics (Formolene), INEOS, Pinnacle Polymers and INVISTA, which took over the former Flint Hills Resources PP business. Canada has one PP plant, Heartland Polymers in Alberta, and Mexico has one producer, Indelpro (Profax, Valtec). Most U.S. plants are on the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast. Producers sell mainly by railcar and bulk truck on contract, so buyers who need a few gaylords usually buy through a distributor, compounder or sourcing company.

The list covers base resin makers only. Compounders that buy PP and add talc, glass, rubber or color are not listed, even when their product carries a PP brand. We leave out capacities unless a company states them, and we never list prices. For current price drivers, see polypropylene price per pound.

Homopolymer, impact copolymer and random copolymer

Every producer above sells PP in three basic families. Pick the family first, then the melt flow rate (MFR).

  • Homopolymer. Propylene only. The stiffest and most heat resistant of the three, but brittle in the cold. Common for housewares, caps, fiber, film and general molding.
  • Impact copolymer. Homopolymer with a rubbery ethylene-propylene phase mixed in. Tougher, especially below freezing, and a little less stiff. Common for crates, pails, automotive parts and appliance parts.
  • Random copolymer. A small amount of ethylene built into the chain. Clearer and more flexible, with a lower melting point. Common for clear containers, housewares and medical or lab parts.

For a side by side comparison, read PP homopolymer vs. impact copolymer. For typical numbers, see polypropylene properties. If you are choosing between PP and HDPE, see PP vs. HDPE.

Brand names and grade codes on bags and data sheets

A bag label or data sheet usually shows a brand plus a grade code. The brand tells you the producer. The grade code tells you the exact recipe. Here is how the main names map.

  • Pro-fax is LyondellBasell's U.S. PP brand, covering homopolymer, random and impact copolymer (for example Pro-fax 6523). Profax without the hyphen is also sold in Mexico by Indelpro, the Alpek and LyondellBasell joint venture, along with Valtec, Axlene and Sphertec. Do not assume a Mexican Profax grade and a U.S. Pro-fax grade are the same. Compare the data sheets.
  • Catalloy resins are LyondellBasell reactor-made specialty resins. Both of its U.S. PP plants list them.
  • INSPIRE is Braskem's name for a family of PP grades, including nucleated homopolymers such as INSPIRE 6025N. Many other Braskem grades carry only a code, such as TI4015F.
  • Exceed and ExxonMobil PP are ExxonMobil's two PP lines. Exceed is the high performance line. Grades once sold as Achieve now sit under Exceed.
  • Lumicene is TotalEnergies' name for metallocene PP. Its standard grades are sold as TotalEnergies Polypropylene plus a number.
  • Formolene is Formosa's PP brand. FormoleneECO grades contain recycled content.
  • INEOS, INVISTA, Pinnacle and Heartland mostly sell by grade code under the company name, for example INEOS H12G-00 or INVISTA AP6106-HS.

When you ask for a quote, send the producer name and the full grade code, not just the brand. If you only have a part print or callout, the MFR, PP family and any filler level are enough to start. Glass-filled and talc-filled PP are compounds, not base resin. See glass-filled polypropylene.

How to buy polypropylene if you need less than a railcar

PP producers sell mainly on contract, by railcar and bulk truck. LyondellBasell's latest annual report says its PP is sold to established customers and distributors under annual contracts or on a spot basis, and moves mostly by railcar or truck in North America. Few producers will open an account for a molder who needs a few gaylords a quarter. Smaller buyers use other channels.

  • Authorized distributors. Producers name distributors for each region. They break railcars into gaylords and bags and sell common grades by the box or pallet. Most producer websites have a distributor finder or contact page.
  • Compounders. If you need talc, glass, impact modifier, UV package or color, a compounder makes it from base PP. Minimum runs vary by line.
  • Traders and sourcing companies. They find prime grades, close equivalents, wide-spec and surplus lots across many sources. Ask for the producer COA, the lot number and whether the material is prime.

PP is easy to store and ship. Unfilled PP picks up very little moisture, so most grades run without drying. A gaylord box holds about 1,000 to 1,600 lb (450 to 725 kg), and 55 lb (25 kg) bags are common for small needs. Price per pound drops as the lot size goes up, so tell your supplier your yearly usage as well as the first order.

ResinBridge quotes polypropylene from one gaylord to a railcar, with the supplier COA on every prime lot. A polymer chemist reviews every request, and we aim to quote within one to three business days. What to send for a polypropylene quote

A complete request gets a faster and more accurate quote. Send what you have:

  • Grade or spec. Producer and full grade code, or the PP family (homopolymer, impact or random copolymer) and the MFR. PP melt flow is measured at 446°F (230°C) with a 2.16 kg load (ASTM D1238). Density varies little across PP grades, so MFR and family matter more.
  • Fillers and additives. Talc or glass level, nucleated or clarified, UV, antistatic or color.
  • Approvals. FDA food contact, UL listing, automotive or medical specs, if your part needs them.
  • Process. Injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, blow molding or fiber.
  • Volume. Pounds per order and per year, and whether this is a trial or a running job.
  • Ship-to. City and ZIP or postal code, and any dock or delivery limits.
  • Packaging. Gaylord, 55 lb (25 kg) bags, bulk truck or railcar.
  • Prime or not. Prime only, or open to wide-spec, surplus or recycled PP.

Send it through our quote form. If you want to know whether a grade is still made before you ask for price, try the resin supply check.

Recent changes buyers should know

The North American PP producer list has been stable, but a few changes affect what you see on paperwork and who you deal with.

  • Braskem. Braskem decided in September 2023 to idle one of its two PP lines at Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, according to its FY2025 annual report. In August 2025 it confirmed early talks to possibly sell U.S. assets to Unipar Carbocloro; at that point only a confidentiality agreement was signed. We found no announced sale as of November 2026. Separately, IG4 Capital agreed in 2026 to take over Novonor's controlling stake in Braskem. IG4 said in June 2026 that the deal had closed, and that IG4 and Petrobras now share control of Braskem. In August 2026 the parent company, Braskem S.A., filed for extrajudicial recovery (an out-of-court debt restructuring) in Brazil covering about $10.9 billion of debt, and a São Paulo court accepted the filing on Aug 28, 2026. Braskem's U.S. plants and grade names were unchanged as of this writing.
  • LyondellBasell. In May 2026 LyondellBasell completed the sale of four European olefin and polyolefin sites to AEQUITA, and they now run as Velogy. The sale covered sites in France, Germany, the UK and Spain only. LyondellBasell's U.S. PP plants were not part of it. On its October 2026 earnings call, LyondellBasell also said it plans to finish maintenance at its Lake Charles PP site in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to Argus.
  • ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil moved its PP into the Signature Polymers naming scheme. Achieve grades moved under Exceed, with renames running from the third quarter of 2024 to the second quarter of 2025. Older data sheets may still say Achieve.
  • INVISTA. INVISTA, a Koch company, took over the Flint Hills Resources propylene business, including the Longview, Texas PP operation, in 2022. Older paperwork may still show Flint Hills Resources.
  • Heartland Polymers. Canada's only PP plant entered commercial production in early 2023. It makes homopolymer and random copolymer, not impact copolymer.

Common questions

Who is the largest polypropylene producer in North America?

LyondellBasell says it was the largest PP producer in North America at the end of 2025, with about 1.9 million tons per year of capacity, counting its share of joint ventures. Braskem, citing the consultancy CMA, says its own U.S. plants have the largest PP capacity in the United States. LyondellBasell's U.S. PP plants are in Pasadena, Texas and Westlake, Louisiana.

Who makes polypropylene resin in Canada?

Heartland Polymers, part of Inter Pipeline, makes PP at its Heartland Petrochemical Complex north of Edmonton, Alberta. Inter Pipeline calls it Canada's only PP production operation, and it makes homopolymer and random copolymer grades.

Is polypropylene made in Mexico?

Yes. Indelpro, a joint venture of Alpek and LyondellBasell, makes PP in Altamira, Tamaulipas. It sells homopolymer, random and impact copolymer under the Profax, Valtec, Axlene and Sphertec names.

Can I buy PP resin directly from a producer?

Usually only at railcar or bulk truck volumes, on contract. If you need a few gaylords or bags, buy through an authorized distributor, a compounder or a sourcing company, and ask for the producer COA with each lot.

Is Pro-fax the same as Profax?

Pro-fax is LyondellBasell's PP brand in the U.S. Indelpro sells Profax grades in Mexico under its joint venture with LyondellBasell. Treat them as separate grades and compare data sheets before you swap one for the other.

Does Braskem still make polypropylene in the U.S.?

Yes. Braskem's FY2025 annual report lists U.S. PP sites in La Porte, Freeport and Seadrift, Texas, Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania and Neal, West Virginia. Braskem confirmed early sale talks with Unipar in August 2025, but we found no announced deal as of November 2026.

What is the difference between PP homopolymer and impact copolymer?

Homopolymer is stiffer and handles heat better but gets brittle in the cold. Impact copolymer has a rubbery phase that makes it much tougher at low temperatures, with a small loss in stiffness.
