The short answer

ULTEM 9085 is SABIC’s unreinforced, amorphous polyetherimide (PEI) blend for aircraft cabin interiors. SABIC’s sheet calls it a polyetherimide blend; some third-party listings describe it as a blend of PEI and a polycarbonate copolymer, but SABIC’s sheet does not name the blend partner. The sheet says it “meets Aerospace FAR25.853 and OSU55/55 heat release requirements.” Published melt flow is 8.9 g/10 min at 295°C / 563°F, 6.6 kg (ASTM D1238). Specific gravity is 1.34 (ASTM D792), HDT is 153°C at 1.82 MPa (ASTM D648, 3.2 mm), and notched Izod is 115 J/m (ASTM D256). The current sheet lists no UL 94 rating and no glass transition temperature. These are typical values; confirm them on the current producer data sheet. The closest grade to ask about is SABIC’s ULTEM 9075, another FST-rated PEI blend with much lower flow. No grade is a drop-in replacement, and for aircraft parts any change needs program approval.

Also written as: ULTEM 9085 resin, ULTEM 9085 PEI. SABIC says ISCC+ certified bio-based versions of this grade are sold under different color codes. Quote the full grade and color code from your drawing, OEM spec or bag label, because the color code decides what you get. Looking for 3D printing filament? ULTEM 9085 is also sold as filament by other companies. This page covers the resin pellets for injection molding and extrusion only.

Mold temperatures of 120–150°C usually need oil or high-temperature mold heaters rather than water. Check your press and tool before planning a trial.

Grades to ask about instead of ULTEM 9085

The closest option is SABIC’s own ULTEM 9075, another PEI blend whose sheet carries FAR 25.853 and OSU data. ULTEM 1000 and 1010 are straight unfilled PEI rather than blends, with higher heat; buyers sometimes look at them for interior parts. We did not find a producer-published sheet for a 9085-type PEI blend from another base-resin producer. None is a drop-in replacement. If your part, drawing, OEM spec or customer approval names ULTEM 9085, any change needs that approval and usually new flammability testing.

It has much higher heat and lower density, but lower notched impact. It needs 150°C drying and 135–180°C molds. Its sheet does not publish the OSU heat release values that 9085’s does, so ask for them if your part needs OSU data. See our ULTEM 1000 page. Quote this alternative ›

From each producer’s published data; typical values, confirm on the current producer data sheet. Brand owners and grade names change.

Typical uses for ULTEM 9085

SABIC lists high flow, thin wall, low smoke and toxicity, and a balance of flow, stiffness and ductility among the features of ULTEM 9085. The sheet and SABIC’s aircraft-interiors brochure name these uses:

  • Aerospace cabin interiors, including thin-wall, lightweight parts
  • Colored personal units and infotainment system parts (shown in SABIC’s aircraft-interiors brochure)
  • Rail and mass transportation parts (SABIC states an EN45545 R6-HL3 rating)
  • Sheet and profile extrusion, and thermoformed parts
  • FDM printing and large format additive manufacturing (the brochure shows a 3D printed air duct)

What to check before you switch

  • Owner check: the current ULTEM 9085 data sheet (revision 20260501) is issued by SABIC. Brand owners change, so confirm on your quote who issues the COA and any compliance letters.
  • Flammability data belongs to the part, not just the resin. SABIC’s FAR 25.853 and OSU values come from test coupons. A new grade, color, thickness or supplier can change results, so plan on your program’s own flammability testing.
  • Confirm OEM approval in writing. SABIC says ULTEM 9085 is approved by main aerospace OEMs but does not name them. Check that the grade and color code you order match the OEM material specification on your drawing.
  • Bio-based versions use different color codes. If you want, or must avoid, an ISCC+ certified version, say so on the RFQ, and check whether your approval covers it.
  • ULTEM 1000 and 1010 are not substitutes without approval. They are unfilled PEI with Tg 217°C, a different density (1.27 vs 1.34) and lower notched Izod. They also need hotter drying (150°C) and hotter molds (135–180°C). See the PEI buying guide. Glass-filled ULTEM 2300 is a further step away.
  • PEEK is not a PEI blend substitute without redesign. It is semi-crystalline, shrinks differently and needs hotter tools. See PEEK vs. PEI and Victrex PEEK 450G.
  • Pellets and filament are different products. Filament made from ULTEM 9085 resin is sold separately by other companies; this page and our quotes cover resin pellets.
  • Dry it properly. The sheet asks for 120–130°C for 4–6 hours and 0.02 % maximum moisture. See our resin drying guide.
  • Compare melt flow only at the same condition. ULTEM 9085 and 9075 are measured at 295°C, ULTEM 1000 and 1010 at 337°C, and ASTM and ISO results differ.
  • Run a trial lot and check fill, shrinkage, cycle time, stress cracking, appearance and flammability before you switch production.

Buying ULTEM 9085: price, lead time and lot size

  • Lot size. From one gaylord to a railcar. See gaylord, LTL and truckload for typical weights per box.
  • Where it ships from. 22+ partner warehouse locations. Material already in a partner warehouse usually moves sooner than a grade that has to come from the producer; your quote says which applies.
  • Price. We do not publish prices because they move with feedstock, freight and order size. What moves your price most: lot size, color code, ship-to region, and whether you need ULTEM 9085 itself or can accept a matched alternative. See how resin is priced and the monthly market update.
  • Paperwork. Supplier COA on every prime lot (what a COA shows). Ask for the producer’s compliance letters or UL file if your part needs them.
  • Trying an alternative? Start with one gaylord as a trial lot, molded and checked before you commit a full release.
  • If ULTEM 9085 itself is not available. Some branded grades are sold only through the producer’s own channels or go on allocation. If we cannot source it, we tell you, then quote a matched alternative with a side-by-side comparison.

Send the grade and color code, your annual volume and ship-to location. A polymer chemist checks it before we quote; we have been in the resin business for 30+ years. For several grades at once, use the resin RFQ template.

Trade names belong to their owners. ResinBridge is not affiliated with these producers; grade names are used only to identify the material. Data reflects published sheets as of November 2026.

Common questions

What is ULTEM 9085?

ULTEM 9085 is a SABIC polyetherimide (PEI) blend, unreinforced and amorphous, designed for aircraft cabin interiors. SABIC’s sheet calls it simply a “polyetherimide blend”; some third-party listings describe it as a blend of PEI and a polycarbonate copolymer, but SABIC’s sheet does not name the blend partner. It is opaque and can be custom colored. SABIC also lists rail parts and FDM printing as uses. This page covers the resin pellets for injection molding and extrusion.

Does ULTEM 9085 meet FAR 25.853?

SABIC’s data sheet says the material “meets Aerospace FAR25.853 and OSU55/55 heat release requirements.” It lists OSU total heat release (2 minute test) of ≤ 55 kW-min/m², OSU peak heat release rate (5 minute test) of ≤ 55 kW/m², and a pass on the 60-second vertical burn at 2 mm. Those are test-coupon results. Whether your finished part complies depends on its thickness, color, finish and the certification testing your program requires.

What is the melt flow of ULTEM 9085?

8.9 g/10 min at 295°C, 6.6 kg (ASTM D1238), and MVR 40 cm³/10 min at 340°C, 5.0 kg (ISO 1133). These are typical values; confirm them on the current producer data sheet. ULTEM 1000 and 1010 are measured at 337°C, so do not compare their melt flow numbers directly with these.

What is the heat deflection temperature of ULTEM 9085?

153°C at 1.82 MPa and 169°C at 0.45 MPa (ASTM D648, 3.2 mm, unannealed), and 152°C by ISO 75/Af. Vicat B50 is 173°C. The current SABIC sheet does not list a glass transition temperature. These are typical values; confirm them on the current producer data sheet.

What is the UL 94 rating of ULTEM 9085?

The current SABIC data sheet (revision 20260501) does not list a UL 94 rating. If your part needs one, ask for the UL file or yellow card for your exact color and wall thickness before you order. For aircraft interiors, the FAR 25.853 and OSU data above usually matter more.

What is the difference between ULTEM 9085 and ULTEM 1000?

They are different materials. ULTEM 1000 is unfilled PEI with a Tg of 217°C, HDT 201°C at 1.82 MPa (6.4 mm), specific gravity 1.27 and UL 94 V-0 at 0.75 mm and above. ULTEM 9085 is a PEI blend with lower heat (HDT 153°C at 1.82 MPa on 3.2 mm bars), specific gravity 1.34 and higher notched Izod (115 vs 53 J/m, ASTM D256). Its sheet is built around aircraft-interior heat release data. Processing differs too: ULTEM 9085 is dried at 120–130°C and molded at 330–350°C. Typical values; confirm on the current producer data sheets.

What is equivalent to ULTEM 9085?

No grade is a drop-in replacement. The closest grade to ask about is SABIC’s ULTEM 9075, another PEI blend whose sheet states FAR 25.853 and OSU 65/65. It has much lower melt flow (2.4 vs 8.9 g/10 min at 295°C, 6.6 kg). ULTEM 1000 and 1010 are straight PEI, not blends, with higher heat. Compare data sheets, run a trial, and get approval if your part, drawing or OEM spec names ULTEM 9085.

Can ResinBridge supply ULTEM 9085?

We quote ULTEM 9085 when our supply partners can source it. If they cannot, we say so up front and quote a matched alternative, named on the quote with its data sheet, so you can decide whether to trial it. For aircraft parts, any change of grade or color needs your program’s approval first.

If your grade is not listed, tell us what you run. We source commodity, engineering and specialty resins.
