Request a QuoteThe short answer
STYRON 685D is a high heat, high tensile strength crystal polystyrene (GPPS) with a blue tint, sold in North America by Americas Styrenics (AmSty) for foam, oriented polystyrene (OPS) sheet and medical uses. Published melt flow is 1.5 g/10 min, measured at 200°C / 392°F, 5 kg, ASTM D1238; specific gravity is 1.04 (ASTM D792) and Vicat softening temperature is 108°C / 227°F (ASTM D1525). STYRON is a Trinseo trademark; AmSty is a 50/50 venture of Trinseo and Chevron Phillips Chemical, and Trinseo has been in Chapter 11 since May 26, 2026 (it expects to exit in the first half of 2027) while AmSty keeps selling the grade. Grades from other producers to ask about include TotalEnergies Polystyrene 595T and 535B. They are not identical, so compare the data sheets and run a trial before switching.
Also written as: STYRON™ 685D. AmSty also sells STYRON 685C, 685DL, 685DR and 685P; those are separate grades with their own sheets, not color codes of 685D. Quote the full code from your drawing or bag label.

Source data sheets are listed at the bottom of this page. Confirm against the current sheet for your exact grade code and color.
The producer's sheet gives no drying step. Crystal polystyrene takes up little moisture, but if parts show silver streaks or splay, dry the resin or check for condensation on material brought in from a cold warehouse.
Grades to ask about instead of STYRON 685D
These grades from other producers have similar published specs. None is a drop-in replacement: additive packages, flow at molding shear rates, color and approvals differ. If your part, drawing or customer approval names STYRON 685D, any change needs your approval and usually a trial.
| Grade | Producer | Melt flow | Density | Key property | How it compares |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TotalEnergies Polystyrene 595T | TotalEnergies | 1.6 g/10 min (200°C / 392°F, 5 kg, ASTM D1238) | 1.04 g/cm³ | Vicat 225°F / 107°C (ASTM D1525); flexural modulus 490,000 psi (ASTM D790); tensile 7,700 psi (ASTM D638); HDT annealed 211°F / 99°C (ASTM D648) | Close match on flow and heat. High molecular weight, high heat crystal PS made in the U.S., designed for direct injection foam with higher melt strength; listed for foam disposables, foam board and OPS disposables. TotalEnergies states FDA 21 CFR 177.1640. Sheet revised February 2026. Quote this alternative › |

High heat, blue tint crystal PS made in the U.S. for injection molding, extrusion and blow molding (electronics packaging, cutlery, office accessories, medical, appliance components). TotalEnergies lists FDA 21 CFR 177.1640, USP Class VI and UL 94 HB (file E55470); the product page adds DMF listed. Higher flow than 685D, so it suits molding better than foam or OPS extrusion. Typical uses for STYRON 685D
From AmSty's STYRON 685D data sheet:
- Foam
- Oriented polystyrene (OPS) sheet
- Medical parts (with AmSty's medical use restrictions)
What to check before you switch
- 685D has a blue tint. If you need water-white parts, check the color of any alternative (535B is also blue tint; 595T's sheet does not state tint).
- For foam lines, melt strength matters as much as melt flow; TotalEnergies says 595T has higher melt strength than other high heat crystal grades at this flow, so recheck cell structure and density.
- For OPS, AmSty notes that sheet orientation above 30% hurts brittleness and tear for non-OPS polystyrene; keep your orientation settings when you trial an alternative.
- Medical uses need the producer's current USP Class VI and medical policy letters; AmSty restricts several medical applications.
- Ask for the producer's food-contact letter for the exact grade if the part needs one.
- Run a trial lot and check clarity, shrinkage and cycle time before you switch production.
Buying STYRON 685D: price, lead time and lot size
- Lot size. From one gaylord to a railcar. See gaylord, LTL and truckload for typical weights per box.
- Where it ships from. 22+ partner warehouse locations. Material already in a partner warehouse usually moves sooner than a grade that has to come from the producer; your quote says which applies.
- Price. We do not publish prices because they move with feedstock, freight and order size. What moves your price most: lot size, color, ship-to region, and whether you need STYRON 685D itself or can accept a matched alternative. See how resin is priced and the monthly market update.
- Paperwork. Supplier COA on every prime lot (what a COA shows). Ask for the producer’s regulatory letter or UL file if your part needs them.
- Trying an alternative? Start with one gaylord as a trial lot, molded and checked before you commit a full release.
- If STYRON 685D itself is not available. Some branded grades are sold only through the producer’s own channels or go on allocation. If we cannot source it, we tell you, then quote a matched alternative with a side-by-side comparison.
Send the grade code, your annual volume and ship-to location. A polymer chemist checks it before we quote; we have been in the resin business for 30+ years. For several grades at once, use the resin RFQ template.
Trade names belong to their owners. ResinBridge is not affiliated with these producers; grade names are used only to identify the material. Data reflects published sheets as of October 2026.
